EIA21 developed the basic engineering and CAPEX estimation required to scale up a chemical recycling pilot plant based on plastic waste pyrolysis, enabling the production of recycled pyrolysis oil for circular economy applications.

Engineering for a Plastic Waste Pyrolysis Plant

The Challenge

To scale an operational chemical recycling pilot plant in Zaragoza into an industrial-scale facility while delivering a reliable CAPEX estimate with an accuracy of ±25%.
The main challenge was to technically define a larger-scale plant with a processing capacity of 15,000 tonnes of raw plastic waste per year and 10,500 tonnes of refined product per year, integrating multiple disciplines, technologies and industrial processes into a viable and cost-effective solution.

The Solution

EIA21 developed a comprehensive basic engineering package focused on the technical definition of the plant and the economic assessment of its industrial-scale deployment.
The scope of work included:

  • Industrial-scale conceptual and technical plant definition
  • Development of 3D models for layout and configuration analysis
  • Identification and specification of major process equipment
  • Request for quotations from specialist suppliers and contractors
  • Collection of real market pricing data for key disciplines, including mechanical, electrical, instrumentation & control, civil works and structural engineering

This approach created a robust and realistic basis for the CAPEX estimate, significantly reducing investment uncertainty.

Results

The project provided the client with a reliable investment estimate based on real market data for the industrial deployment of its pyrolysis technology.
Key project achievements included:

  • CAPEX estimation with ±25% accuracy
  • Clear technical definition of the industrial facility
  • Identification of major equipment and installation scope
  • Collection of real market pricing for equipment and construction activities
  • Reduced investment decision-making risks

The project established the foundation for the industrial development of a solution focused on plastic waste valorization and the production of alternative raw materials, supporting the transition towards a circular economy.
